Whitehorse # 2

As mentioned in my first post of Whitehorse, here's a short video of the 'plane vane' – the DC-3 as a weather vane. It's only 35 seconds long. It's cool.

In a museum near the plane vane. This is a Ryan aircraft—the type Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic. Apparently a guy in the Yukon was scheduled to get the first one off the production line, Lindbergh was going to get the second one. Lindbergh thought he should have the first one. So he worked out a deal with the Yukon guy and he did get the first one.

The sculptor did a great job capturing his pain & determination.

Saw lots of gophers on the road but no shots. I love to see them scamper & jump. Memories of Moose Jaw.

8 foot beavers used to roam the world. What size dams & lodges did they build?

Here's looking at you.

Outside a second museum. The cavemen had some amazing animals to contend with. Mostly a meat diet I guess. I wouldn't think they had many veggies on their tables. Maybe a few berries. The odd fruit. But I've always wondered who tested them to see if they were poisonous.

Whitehorse is in a beautiful wide valley—in the top-left here.

With lots of small lakes around it.

The flat area (top-left) is the airport. Nice & close to town.

We were high enough on the mountain that this plane was below us.

I like trees. These are Sub-alpine Fir. Thanks Shawn.

Another view from Grey Mountain, behind Doug's place.

A fish ladder in Whitehorse—one of the longer ones in North America they say.

At the fish ladder—the community was invited to add decorated salmon to the fence.

In Doug's garden.

Robbie and his 'lap' dog. He jumped up for a hug.

A well-traveled biker. The sticker on top is from Chicken, Alaska. Story has it that when the town was founded they wanted to call it Ptarmigan, but they weren't sure how to spell it, so they called it Chicken. :-)

Doug thanking those who attended his birthday celebration. It was a good turnout.

A wedding party at the hall where Doug's party was—Davy Crockett style.

The bride & groom. I asked someone in the wedding party if it was the groom's idea. He said it was both of them. "They're crazy." he said. :-)

The streets are wide and street parking is on an angle. Much easier than parallel parking. The grey building is the Best Western, our 'home' for a week.

The elevator in the hotel.

I should have swung around for this shot. These three were from Michigan, on their way to Alaska. Note the teddy bear on the bike on the right.

The story is it was something to do with his ex. They used to ride together and are still on good terms.

They were dedicating the ride to a buddy they lost recently.

A good policy in the north since there are so many bikers on the road.

A knife holder on Doug's kitchen counter.

It's good to get away but it's good to get home too, as they say. But settling back into the routine can be a little of a letdown. The blog lets me relive the holiday and ease back into life a little slower.
